In 1668 Shivaji Maharaj constructed Sarjekot at the mouth of Kalavali Creek. It is one among the chain of forts built by Shivaji Maharaj in and around Malvan. The creek was navigable inland for 11+ kilometers, and it runs in zigzags, thus producing natural safe inland anchorages. Presumably many of Shivaji’s ships could shelter in the creek during storm season.

Sarjekot Fort is one among the many fortresses constructed by the Maratha ruler, Shivaji. Lying north of the Sindhudurg Fort, this fort comes under the group of forts that were in and around Malvan, between the 16th and 18th centuries. The fort gives shelter to Shivaji’s ships during storms and the rainy season.
